Our family at the end of 2019.

I’m Jena.  I’m a small town girl who moved to an even smaller town and married a farmer. I love my life and thank God for it every day.  I know what it is like to be an overwhelmed, busy mama!  My hope it to use what I’ve learned from other women in the trenches to bless you and help make your day just a tiny bit easier.

What started as a blog about the happenings here on our farm has now evolved in to a more personal account of things from my point of view as a farm(er’s) wife. My early posts focus on raising livestock, being green, and learning to cook for men with big appetites! I shared how we managed our money to become debt free (now including the mortgage!) and I updated as we hit new financial milestones.

Much of the blog is now devoted to raising our (6!) boys and all the fun we have with them.  Our family was formed in part by adoption from foster care, and we are happy to answer questions about that.  We homeschool, with an emphasis on reading great stories and using Montessori materials.  We continue to raise animals and work together on the farm.  Then, in our downtime, we enjoy riding horses and roping and cheering our boys on at rodeos.

There’s a lot going on here, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

This is the original picture I shared on this page when I started blogging. Back where it all began, just the two of us on our honeymoon in 2008.

  1. Hi there!

I stumbled accross your blog and I just wanted to let you know that I love it. I am a 22 year old farm girl from a small town as well. We own and operate a 400 acre sod farm in Quyon Quebec. Right accross the road from my house is my brother and his wife and they have a 6700 layer hen operation. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. Keep it up! 🙂 xo

  2. It is nice to “meet” you as well. I look forward to you entries. It is nice reading about another “farming girl”. I am hoping to grow my first garden this year. I’ll have to refer back to your gardening entries for tips 🙂

    1. Aww, that seems so funny that you would look at my gardening archives for tips. I learned much of what I know from my favorite blogging ladies. I’m glad to pass it along and wish you much luck with your garden! My best advice is to plan on mastering one plant per year. Of course plant more than one thing but try really hard to get good at one at a time. Enjoy!

  3. Well I am a very new gardener! I can grow grass and that is about it! ha ha! Any tips will help! Are you going to grow a garden this year? Im having trouble deciding what I want to plant! I want to plant everything! ha ha! Do you normally plan it all out? I’m such a planner so I want to get it all organized! I know from your blogs you like canning. Tonight I am canning apple pie filling. Im going to post pictures on my blog hopefully this week! I can’t wait to try it!

    Take care!

    1. I try to map out at least a general rotation of different plants from year to year. This year I took a somewhat new approach and listed out the foods that I actually NEED to grow to provide the most food for us. For example, I can grow enough potatoes for the whole year and save the $$$ and time spent purchasing them, plus I know how they were grown. I want to grow onions to and probably will but they are lower on the list because they are such a small part of our diet that I won’t mind too much if I have to buy them. Same with popcorn, eggplant, broccoli, etc. We use such small amounts that I can pick those up from local folks at the farmer’s market if I want them. I still need to sort through my seeds and figure out if I need to order anything. Ooh, apple pie filling is the best. It is a lifesaver when you need a quick dessert, just pour it out in a small cake pan with some flour, cinnamon, and sugar on top. Good luck! 🙂

  4. I have been canning for over 28 years………..anytime you need advice (if you don’t know something or are curious) or you want a recipe, holler. I just put up 27# of asparagus paying only .84 cents a pound (I hope to get my crop going soon near the gray water ditch). The yield was 37 pints and three quarts. I also have a wonderful recipe for water-fermented sauerkraut (great with apples, pork roast, onion and potato). It’s not salty and comes out perfect every year, easy to can and ferment, you just need a large crock. Crock-pot apple butter, spiced apple rings, slow-baked applesauce made with honey………..the list goes on and on. I also pickle a lot of veggies, jalapeno’s, baby carrots, green beans, asparagus, cucs, zucchini and beets.

Fun times talking with ladies of like mind! Woo-hoo!!!!

  5. Hi!

I am the casting producer for “The Newlywed Game” in New York City, and I would like to get in touch with you and your husband about possibly being contestants on the show. We will be filming in NYC this summer from July – August and will either do in person auditions for locals (within 2 hours of us) or SKYPE interviews for out of towners. The show is fun and upbeat, hosted by Sherri Shepherd and airs nightly on The Game Show Network. First place winner (out of 3 couples) wins a second honeymoon!

How well do you really know each other??! Find out!

Please call me if you have any questions… My direct number is:212-450-1662

Thanks, and I look forward to speaking with you soon!

    Best,
