Trash Day

Tomorrow is trash day so, obviously, we take out the trash. I have also learned that tonight is the best time to clean out the fridge. I go through and sniff things, inspect containers of who-knows-what, and ask hubby if he is ever going to eat the leftover whatever or if I should just pitch it. We recycle as much as we can and compost most of our food. However, some of the food like chicken bones and meat don’t belong in compost. I also put all my onions and garlic in the trash can. They can be dangerous to the dogs if ingested and I don’t take any chances. Also, store bought potato peels and any other plant material that may carry disease goes right in the trash instead of the garden. If random things like chicken bones come up during the week I either tie it up in an old grocery sack and hide it in the trash or take it to the outside bin.

Purging the fridge once a week helps the trash stay fresh since any leftovers go in all at once and go right out the next day. At the same time I can combine containers of this and that and make a plan to use up anything that is about to outdate. I usually end up topping off the dishwasher with those empty containers the same night.

I’m glad I made this a part of my weekly routine. Simple, but it works for me! 🙂

  1. Tomorrow’s our trash day, too. We clean out the fridge tonight just like you guys. The trash smells about 10x worse to me now that I’m pregnant, so it’s become Ed’s domain, and I’ll be happy to keep it that way!
